Quick Stat: A McAfee study found that 77% of AI voice-cloning scam victims lost money, and nearly one-third lost over $1,000.

How to stop AI voice scams in their tracks
Here are five essential tips to keep yourself and your family safe:
- Create a Family Password: Pick a code word your family can use in emergencies. If you get a call from someone claiming to be in trouble, ask for the code. No code? Hang up.
- Beware of Urgency: Scammers want you to act fast. Any call pressuring you to send money right away—even if it sounds like your cousin Kevin—is a red flag.
- Don’t Trust Caller ID: Caller IDs can be faked. Always hang up and call back using a known number from your contacts or a verified source.
- Watch for Weird Payment Requests: If someone asks for money via gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency, be suspicious. Legit help rarely comes in the form of a Target gift card.
- Think Before You Post: Avoid sharing voice or video clips on social media. It only takes three seconds for AI to clone your voice. (Yep, even that karaoke video from last week.)
